We are pleased to announce the launch of the Earth Systems and Soil Research Group (ESSRG) — an independent, voluntary, interdisciplinary scientific research group established to advance fundamental and applied research in Earth sciences, soil science, ecology, geospatial technologies, natural resource management, forestry, agricultural sciences, and other related disciplines.
ESSRG was created in response to the need for a broader scientific understanding of natural processes that cannot be fully investigated within the boundaries of a single discipline. Soils, ecosystems, climate, water resources, vegetation, land use, and human activities form a single interconnected system. Changes in one of its components inevitably affect the others.
For this reason, the Group’s activities will be based on systems-based and interdisciplinary approaches, combining field research, laboratory analysis, statistical modelling, geographic information systems, Earth observation, and modern methods of spatial data processing.
Our Mission
The mission of ESSRG is to study soils, ecosystems, and climate processes as interconnected components of the Earth system.
We aim to generate scientific knowledge that contributes to a better understanding of natural processes, enables the assessment of the impacts of human activities and climate change, supports the prediction of environmental transformations, and facilitates the development of evidence-based solutions for the sustainable management of land and natural resources.
It is important to us that scientific findings do not remain confined to individual publications. They should be understandable, verifiable, and useful to researchers, lecturers, students, and professionals working in land use, agriculture, forestry, environmental protection, and spatial planning.
Main Areas of Activity
ESSRG’s research interests encompass a broad range of issues related to the functioning of natural and human-modified systems.
Our priority areas include:
- soil health, properties, and functioning;
- soil organic carbon and greenhouse gas emissions;
- interactions among soils, ecosystems, and climate;
- environmental and mathematical modelling;
- geographic information systems and Earth observation;
- monitoring of land and environmental change;
- sustainable land use and cadastral-geospatial research;
- functioning and restoration of forest ecosystems;
- assessment of the impacts of warfare on soils, land, and the environment.
This list is not exhaustive. The Group will develop new research areas in response to current scientific challenges, available data, partnership initiatives, and societal needs.
What Will Be Published on the Website
The official ESSRG website will serve as an open information platform for presenting the Group’s activities.
The blog and relevant sections of the website will feature:

Researchers, lecturers, postgraduate students, early-career scientists, geospatial technology specialists, ecologists, soil scientists, agronomists, foresters, geographers, land management specialists, modellers, data analysts, and professionals from other related fields are welcome to collaborate with the Group.
Participation in the Group’s activities may involve joint research, preparation of publications, exchange of data and methodologies, participation in scientific discussions, development of project proposals, conducting surveys, organisation of events, and preparation of information materials.
For us, formal affiliation with a particular institution is less important than professional competence, research responsibility, integrity, and a willingness to engage in constructive collaboration.
